Porto Valtravaglia consists of seven different hamlets, which in 1928 merged to form a single municipality.
Between the seventeenth and eighteenth century Porto was enriched with nice buildings built by the nobles and upper-class families, almost all located along the current via Roma and near the port.
In 1759, Carlo Felice Cioja Mellerio founded a factory, in Porto, specialized in the production of glass plates, decanters and crystal glasses. It is said that the purity of the glass of Porto was slightly lower than that of Bohemia. Do not miss: in Porto, the lakeside street with buildings dating from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the church of Santa Maria Assunta, in Romanesque style, built around the year 1000 and consecrated in 1581 by Charles Borromeo and the church of San Rocco, built in 1623.
